Douglas Fir Lumber

Douglas Fir is a tall, strong wood with a straight grain that's easy to work. It's a popular choice for furniture, flooring, and other wood products. As a supplies of Douglas Fir increase (increasing the demand for lumber) then so does the price of wood which impacts the price and availability of other materials and wood products. Because softwood trees grow quickly, they are a renewable resource and are not contributing to deforestation. They also produce less waste than hardwoods and are easy to harvest and process because they grow naturally in multi-trunked stands. However, the majority of North American softwood forests are currently located in the northern US and Canada—meaning the wood from northern forests is often transported over long distances before being made into lumber or other wood products. Transportation costs increase the carbon footprint of wood products and so it is essential that producers take environmental considerations into account when sourcing their timber and making decisions regarding where to produce it.

Softwood tree harvesting and timber production are often done by hand using small machinery or hand tools. Once a tree is felled, the logs are transported to a sawmill where they are cut into planks and beams of various dimensions using a bandsaw, circular saw, or planer. Next, the planks and beams are sanded and graded according to quality before being sold as finished products. Wood mills also use portable mills called "portable saw mills" that can be moved directly to a forest to cut timber in situ. These are quicker, cheaper to set up and operate than traditional stationary mills but can only cut logs of a certain diameter and cant be moved once they have been set up. The final product is typically stored in large stacks at the mill until sold. Logs can also be exported to other countries for processing.
